A balmy June evening saw the Brunel Sinfonia perform to a good audience with their second performance of Rach 2. As far as symphonies go, this is as romantic as it gets, and it was an excellent performance from the orchestra. The Glinka provided a lively opening to the evening which was followed by a master class in fiddle playing from Roger Huckle, who mesmerised us with his performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. The general feeling amongst the players was one of happiness, as this was a much improved performance of the Rach then when we attempted it back in 2007.

So join us in November for a bit of Elgar, Bruch and Wagner!

The Brunel Sinfonia’s Night at The Movies turned out to be a phenomenal success. Performing to a packed Victoria Rooms, the play list included some of the most well-known film scores from Hollywood. The evening didn’t quite start as planned, however, when, just the players were taking the stage, the fire alarm went off. It proved to be a short delay though, and it wasn’t long before the first notes of 20th Centuray Fox Fanfare signalled the concert’s start. This was followed by Star Wars, with selected themes from the first film, Episode IV: A New Hope. The audience were allowed to catch their breath with The Godfather before Jurassic Park got things going again.

Other films appearing in the first half were Barber’s Adagio for Strings (Platoon), Gladiator and James Bond. The second half kicked off with Harry Potter taking the baton in place of the usual conductor, Tom Gauterin, and started with Pirates of The Caribbean. A beautiful performance of Schindler’s List, including a quite magnificent solo from leader Tina Mehta followed, before renditions of The Big Country, ET and Lord of The Rings. The party was crashed by Wallace and Gromit at the end, who refused to let the Orchestra leave without playing their theme tune.

Well done to all the orchestra, it was a truely memorable evening, made all the more special by the various costumes dotted around! I’ve been humming Pirates of the Caribbean for the last few days! Many thanks to all our audience, and we hope to see you all again in April for The Planets.

Among the audience was the winner of out Twitter competiton, the24thframe, whose report of the evening you can read here.
